Some ocean passages are smooth; in others, chaos lurks nearby. The weather snarls. Mechanical systems fail. Crew relations spiral into weirdness. It's these, selected from the many voyages I've taken as a professional delivery captain, that are collected here.
After a tough trip, re-examination is inevitable. The signs were there; how could I have ignored them? At what point did optimism obscure reality? This book examines that puzzle. It's written for those who love the sea and the stories it inspires, in the spirit of hope that we never grow too old to learn from experience.

Red Flags in Blue Water eBook R A Bard Reviews
I could hear Rich's voice as I read Red Flags in Blue Water. Rye, knowledgeable, given to quixotic asides, Rich had the ability deliver you into his world and make you want to live there, at least for awhile. He has given us all an insight into the struggles, joys and rewards of long ocean passages and has rekindled in me the desire to experience it all first hand. Now if i could just get on board!
I want this guy as my captain, should I ever find myself sailing the high seas. The clarity of Bard's writing enhances his engaging tales of the challenges of working with temperamental crew members while delivering boats for quirky owners. His knowledge of weather and boat mechanics are equaled only by his patience and psychological insight. A very good read, even for someone who knows zero about boats.
I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Bard's memories of sailing the high seas. I have been to a number of places he mentions in the book, and have spent a year-and-a-half at sea in the Navy. What strikes me most about his tales are the dynamics of interpersonal relationships with small crews in small boats, and how stress and sleep deprivation can so easily wear one down. Well written Sir Richard!
Two lessons I learned from RFiBW 1) If the captain is the only adult on board, he/she must calculate when to push people and when to pull back, when to confront and when to let go. Needless to say, Mr. Bard was the only adult in many of his crossings and passages. 2) If you're the head guy/gal on a small vessel in big water, you'd better have a good working knowledge of and the ability to jury-rig any system upon which your survival depends. Captain Bard brought himself and his crew through difficult times with an astonishing array of diverse skills. My hat's off to him!
I really enjoyed this book. Captain Bard is a man of the sea, and this book is well written. He tells of real life adventures, mishaps, and challenges, with lack of pretension and with humor. I would recommend it to all mariners and mariners of the imagination. On a personal note, Captain Bard delivered my sailboat from Eureka, CA to Oak Harbor, WA in 2009 with me as crew. I enjoyed experiencing those days on the ocean with him, and learned a lot. I must say however, on reading the book I was somewhat relieved not to see our voyage included.
Set on the high seas, between origin and destination, Red Flags in Blue Waters is one former commercial fisherman's tale of life anew as a delivery captain on voyages long and short, successful and otherwise. No longer working for himself, the author finds himself surrounded by social and mechanical madness--from an addict trying to recover cold turkey between Hawaii and the mainland to an owner who refuses to acknowledge both his crummy engine and his omnipresent and inappropriate red speedo attire.
R A Bard's combination of straightforward storytelling mixed with observational humor makes the turn of a page as easy a simple tack in light wind.
Highly recommended.

Richard Bard has done it again. With "Red Flags in Blue Water", he takes the reader on a journey - several journeys- of adventure and mishap on seas high and low. Bard's gentle good humor shines through insightful observations of nature fierce and sublime; seamanship, lousy weather, and narcissistic yacht owners. Not spared by Bard's pen are the shenanigans of psycho crew members and the persistent failings of the mechanical systems on the boats he is delivering. The reader has the sense that we'd sail with Bard anywhere and be confident he'd show us a good time and deliver us safely. The same can be said of reading his books.
